IELTS is getting to be a very popular English language test. It has been around for almost 20 years and in the last year more than one million people gained IELTS certificates for further education, employment or immigration purposes. The official IELTS site even says that because of the huge numbers of candidates in China, India, Australia, UK and Pakistan, IELTS became the most popular international English language test in the world!

Slowly but surely IELTS finds its way into USA – just recently another 57 universities joined the list of many others already recognizing IELTS in the States. This year more IELTS Test Centers will open in USA to meet the growing demand for IELTS exams.

UK has accepted IELTS as the official English test for immigration purposes and IELTS band score can be translated into equivalent Cambridge ESOL Certificate of corresponding level.

China has opened its borders to IELTS, and Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT) was the first school in People?s Republic of China to recognize IELTS – surely others will follow and it’s just a matter of time.

Below are the questions and topics shared by our friends S and D, from Australia and Indonesia. According to them the two exams were the same (with the exception of speaking, of course).

Listening test

Section 1. Registering for IT exhibition in Toronto, Canada.

Section 2. About a holiday resort in Queensland.

Section 3. A student who had an accident was trying to get some advice on how he can do his school activities.

Section 4. About the correlation between agriculture and economic growth of Indonesia.

Reading test

Passage1. About the procedure of buying a new or used car in England.

Section 2. Matching some kinds of apartments or units advertised in newspapers.

Section 3. About safety at workplace and what to do in order to minimize injuries or back pain.

Section 4. About the procedure of hiring new employees.

Section 5. The history and use of peppercorn and its contribution to the medical science and economy in general.

Writing test


Writing task 1 (a letter)

Your friend would like to put together an international food book. Write a letter to him/her and describe a dish that you tried recently. Please say

- What was that dish?
- When and where have you eaten it?
- Suggest your friend to include the recipe of that dish in his/her book.

Writing Task 2 (an essay)

All high or secondary school students should be taught how to manage money, because it is an important life skill. Do you agree or disagree?

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

You have read an article in a newspaper about someone you know. Write a letter to the editor as follows:

- describe the article,
- explain what details were wrong in the article and what the correct ones are,
- suggest what he/she should do about the article.

You should write at least 150 words.

Model Answer

To the editor of the Vancouver Political Observer,

I am writing to you regarding an article you published yesterday on the Editorial page of your Local News section.

Your portrayal of my friend, political activist Stanley Jackson, is completely inaccurate. In the article, you accuse Stanley of being ‘a politician with little regard for the environment. Having known Stanley for twenty years, I can tell you that Mr. Jackson cares highly for nature. In fact, only two weeks ago he sponsored the establishment of a tree farm and will be the guest of honour when it opens. You may also be surprised to learn that Mr. Jackson’s home has been completely outfitted with solar panels, making him among the first people in our township to operate entirely off of green energy. 

What I would like to see is a reprint of your article with all inaccuracies corrected. Further, out of decency, I think the least you could do is publish a public apology to Mr. Jackson for defaming him this way.
